Descrição: The notes, written by Aglaia Mitropoulou, make thorough reference to the films that have been shot based on Shakespeare’s play ROMEO AND JULIET, and especially to the great stars that played the part of Juliet: Francesca Bertini in two cinematic versions: by MARIO CASERINI (1908) and by GEROLAMO LA SAVIO (1911), Theda Bara (1916), Norma Shearer (1936), Leila Muratti (1944), the great Nargis (1944), the great German soprano Tetratsini (1909) in a German version, the unique dancer Galina Ulanova (1954) in the Russian version with Prokofiev’s music, Anouk Aimée (1948) in the “LOVERS OF VERONA” by André Cayatte, Sandra Dee in Peter Ustinov’s film and finally Natalie Wood in the “WEST SIDE STORY” (1961). Renato Castellani, in his own version in technicolor in 1954, retains the English character of the theatrical play, searching for a cinematic form that doesn’t reveal his neo-realist conscience and, at the same time, highlights the catalytic passion of the story. In order to achieve his goal, he chooses non-professional actors for the roles of the legendary couple: his Juliet and Romeo are beginners and at the actual age portrayed by Shakespeare. As a result, they succeed in convincing the viewer of their passionate love, full of flame and greed. Finally, the programme mentions the Golden Lion that the film won at the Venice Film Festival, Roman Vlad’s wonderful music and the costumes by Leonor Fini.
